The felting needles come in various gauges.  I use the medium and the light gauge most often.  The heavy gauge roots too much in a hole for my tastes.

The wooden handle is optional--but I wouldn't be able to root without it.

You may want to put some uncooked rice in a sock and heat it in the microwave oven for a few seconds (45-60 seconds is plenty of time in our microwave).  Then insert the rice sock inside the head and give it just  a minute to warm the vinyl.

I am using wavy mohair from Pearl Moon.  It comes tied together in bundles.

Cut (if tied in bundles--like I am using here) or pull a small but long section away from the mohair.

You may start at the back of the head or the front--I haven't found it to make a difference.

I lay a few strands out flat on the vinyl and hold it with my thumb and stretching my hand out hold the other side down and in between my first and middle finger.

Take the felting needle and holding it at an angle facing towards the center of the head insert the needle through the mohair and into the vinyl and then back out. Without picking up the hair insert the needle several more times around this area.

Then pull the hair up and place back down in the area right next to what you have just done.
Here is a row along the back of the head.

Don't worry if you see a few holes that have a little too much hair inserted.  I always go through when I am done and pull out any extra hairs with a pair of needle nose tweezers.

As you root, the mohair will become tangled and matted.  Place this piece aside and get a new piece and continue on.

Picture shows the matted mohair after rooting the area in the picture shown above.

You will want to go around the head continuing with the same technique inserting the needle facing towards the crown.

I keep a wire "wig" brush handy to brush it out as I continue to root.

As I close in around the center crown area I take extra care to root long full pieces.

After:

The hair may look like a complete mess when you are done--but don't worry it will soon be tamed, cut and styled.

Now I gently wet the hair combing it down some and place an unused knee high stocking over it and leave it over night to dry.  You may add a little conditioner to the mohair if you need to ( If needed, I will use the Johnson's & Johnson's detangle baby shampoo (pink bottle).
