Painting the exterior with Oil Paints:

This is a very new method for me. I first read about this technique from "Prudy" on doll-fan and I have started trying it on my dolls with some success. Because this is so new I haven't had a chance to really experiment with too many colors, oils and methods, but will describe what I have been doing with the oils thus far. I will be experimenting with new colors and options and will be adding updates periodically.
First, you will begin by mixing the oil paint color(s) you want with some Linseed oil or other similiar material that you prefer. The colors that I am starting with are "Titanium White" mixed with "Flesh Tint" and then the Linseed oil. I use a toothpick dipped in the oil and add it to my paints a little at a time. Then I mix it with the toothpick on my plate and check the color and consistency. I like it to be a nice pale pink color and thin and smooth. I use my fingers mostly and start by rubbing it onto the vinyl. I cover the entire piece using my whole hand to blend. You can use cosmetic cotton puffs, pads or wedges as well. Check your creases for any paint that's not well blended. You may want to use a fine point paint brush or even a small piece of cotton on the end of a toothpick will work great too. After the piece is covered and well blended using my hand I take a clean cotton pad or puff and start buffing the paint and wiping away any excess. Again, don't forget the creases and other details.
Set aside and let dry. It can take any where from 24 hours to a few days depending on the amount of paint and oil used, temperature and humidity levels.
Before and After: Before is the bottom leg and after is the top leg in the picture.
After some "cure" time you may want to go back over the vinyl with a second coat in a few days. I look forward to trying new colors and working with various skin tones as well. Please feel free to email me with any suggestions or questions.
